It is estimated that 60% of human pathogens and 75% of emerging diseases have an animal origin. The three coronavirus epidemics of the past 20 years and the recent outbreak of monkeypox are just some examples. However, animal diseases pose not only a hazard for human health but can also have major economic consequences. In this Webinar, we will discuss the threat of animal diseases to Swiss economy and how the authorities prepare for and combat a specific outbreak: African swine fever. Because of current events, we will also explore the origin of monkeypox, which is caused by a virus that is surprisingly similar to African swine fever virus.
